Sukriti Khandpal has replaced Shilpa Anand in the television soap, Dill Mill Gayee, after the latter opted out. Her character Dr Riddhima has steadily climbed up the popularity charts.

Srabanti Chakrabarti caught up with the actress to find out more about her.

First, tell us about yourself.

I am from Nainital, Uttaranchal. My father is a public prosecutor in Nainital, and my mother is a housewife. I came to Mumbai when I was 14. People think that I came to Mumbai to join the glamour world. But the truth is that I came here to study in a good school. Mumbai is the best place for that.

How did you get your first break?

I was with friends at a coffee shop, when a creative director with Cinevista spotted me and asked me to meet him later for an audition. I auditioned for Jersey No 10 and was selected. I was thrilled!

Were you apprehensive about taking up Dill Mill Gayee, in a character made famous by another actress?

More than 150 episodes had been telecast with Shilpa Anand playing my role, and she was doing a good job. So making a mark was very difficult. What made matters worse was the fact I had never watched the show earlier! So I had to start from scratch. But frankly, I was not apprehensive at all. When I was identified for this role, I thought if the production house had found me suitable, they must have had a reason. Plus, the audience would judge whether I was capable of doing the role or not. This show has given me fame and fortune and I need to express my gratitude to it by working exclusively for Dill Mill Gayee.

How are your co-stars?

All of them are very nice. Karan Singh Grover is very helpful. He made sure I was comfortable in the show. Apart from him, I must mention how much the creative heads of this serial helped me. They would always boost my ego to make sure that I performed to the best of my capabilities.

Your look here is very different from Jersey No 10.

I sported a Western look in Jersey No 10. Here, I am mostly wearing salwar suits! In real life, I have curly hair but on screen, I have to wear straight hair. So my look in this show is quite different from what I really look.

What is your parents' reaction?

Initially, my father was upset. He felt I was too young to decide my future. I am 20 year old. He tries to protect me even now. But slowly, he started liking my work and my decisions. They were also happy since I had completed my college studies. After seeing me in Dill Mill Gayee, they are very happy and proud for me.

Is there a man in your life?

Yes, there is but he is not from the television industry. He is from the hotel industry. We have been seeing each other since our college days.

Karan has girls swooning over his looks and his tattoos.......

Karan Singh Grover aka ‘Mr super cool’ (courtesy Shweta Gulati) is a chilled out and easy going person. The hot and handsome Karan has girls swooning over his looks and his tattoos.

Karan has been seen acting in shows like Kasauti…, Dill Mill Gayee and now as a host on Zara Nachke Dikha. Over the years Karan has gathered a strong female fan base and is now riding high on the wave of popularity.

Tellychakkar met up with Karan to get an insight into his life.

You have mentioned that you are not really comfortable hosting Zara… and you are not used to a teleprompter. Do you find the job of hosting difficult?

I wasn’t comfortable initially but now I am comfortable. It is a part of the game. It is a lot of fun. It is like a vacation though it gets tiring at times. If I am happy doing something, I keep doing it no matter how tedious it gets.

How is Shweta Gulati as a co-host?

She is an awesome co-host and an awesome friend. She is a lot of fun. She is always supportive and helpful. We get along really well. I feel like I am paired up with a friend. It is really nice.

Many contestants from the boy’s team in Zara… have repeatedly felt that the judges Malaika and Chunky give wrong judgments?

I don’t think the judges are biased but the judge’s job is a bit difficult. Whatever they feel, they mark accordingly. We have to stay calm, value and honour the judge’s decision

If one participant gets lesser marks than the other, the former tends to react in a negative way. If I was in their situation, I would have probably reacted in the same way. Logic doesn’t really strike at that point of time. So I would say that the boys reacted like any other contestant would.

Would you ever participate in a reality show?

I am open to whatever comes along and when I feel like taking up something from the core of my heart, I take it up. I love dancing though. I am bad at following dancing instructions but when the dance is left on me entirely, I can dance really well.

How is it being brought up in Saudi Arabia and now living in Mumbai?

Living in Mumbai is a lot of fun. Saudi Arabia is a place where you should go only when you retire. Mumbai is completely different from the rest of the world. I am glad that I don’t have to go there again.

Do you take advice from girlfriend Shradha Nigam who has been around in the industry for a longer time?

I do not take any decision before consulting Shradha and it is the same with her. After returning from every meeting, I have a chat with her. Whether it is a professional or a personal decision, we always consult each other.

Having a degree in catering, do you cook for her?

No, that is one of her biggest complaints. I don’t get time to cook but I have promised her that I will soon cook for her. On the contrary, she has cooked for me a couple of times.

What are the qualities that your ideal wife should have?

She should be supportive and understanding. I am someone who needs constant support. She should also be a happy, easy going person. Basically, every quality of Shraddha is the quality that I look for, in my ideal wife.

Do you guys talk marriage?

Yes, we do but we don’t have any such plans as of now. When we do, you will come to know.

Staying away from home do you miss your family?

Currently, my parents are living in Delhi. I speak to them on and off but I don’t get to meet them very often. I just meet them once in a couple of months.

What do they feel about their actor son?

They feel very proud. My father is very excited about me. He surfs the net and most of the times, it is he who answers my fan mails. He tells me what girls are saying to me in the mail and when they don’t like a particular shirt that I wore. More than me, he is excited about my profession.

Where do you want to head from here?

I want to do films. There are a few things in the pipeline which I can’t talk about

It is said that over- exposed television actors find it difficult to get a break in films.

That is something I have heard too but I have always come against all odds in my life. When I started my modelling and acting career, I was told that I don’t have the ‘boy next door’ kind of look, my features are just too sharp, I am too muscular, I have tattoos, etc. But today I am here. The most difficult phase was when I was modelling. You see I am not really tall, so I used to be told that I have a sweet face and I should try acting rather than modelling.

Acting was difficult as at that time, I couldn’t even speak Hindi properly. Most of my life, I was surrounded by Malayalis, Hyderabadis and Americans, so I had a different accent. I couldn’t emote in Hindi. That made acting very difficult for me.

Pankit Thakker aka Dr. Atul broke his leg while on shoot, and is now seen nursing in a wheel chair in the serial too...

Dr. Atul of Dill Mill Gayye is nowadays trying hard to woo Dr. Anjali, but gets into problems every time he tries his luck there!! But this time, Pankit Thakker faced a bigger problem as he fractured his leg when he was trying to impress his on screen love Dr. Anjali. “There was a scene where I had to climb a pipe to go to Anjali’s room; but unfortunately fell down and broke my leg. The doctor has advised me to take two weeks of rest”, says the actor. But the actor is not going on a break as the creative team has changed the script to accommodate Pankit even with his broken leg. “I will continue shooting, as Dr. Atul is shown with a fractured leg in the show. I will be seen in a wheel chair till I get alright”, states Pankit.

Well, as we wish Pankit a speedy recovery, we hope Dr. Atul too gets his share of luck when it comes to girls…

The way she talks the way she reacts on the screen is very me and our writer writes dialogues just they way we talk.... my character is pretty similar to me accept from the fact that Sunaina is very sweeter and Dr Anjali is more confident

How is the ZND experience?

I'm loving the idea of boys vs girls and it's great to do anchoring as here there won't be any tension for me but at the same time I'm missing the dance floor. I go crazy when it comes for dancing and I'm missing Shraddha. I'm thankful that she is not in the team of mithi churi ladkiyaan. Even she loves this concept of dance where there is no elimination.

According to you who are strongest and funniest contestants from both the sides?

Among the Tez Talwar Ladke it's Bhaktiyar, Ali Asgar, Chaitanya Choudhary while among Mithi Churiyaan it's Mouni Roy, Karishma Tanna and sometimes Delnaaz Paul also.

So are you enjoying your new act of anchoring?

Oh yes it's wonderful and as an actor I got to know how to anchor. There is less hard work but at the same time you have to concentrate more on the anchor script. I knew before doing Dil Mil Gaye that I will be anchoring for Star. I'm happy with anchoring and again Zara Nach Ke Dikha has everything emotion, romance and masti.

What's happening in DilL MilL GayYe?

Lots happening in the life of Dr.Aarmaan and his love. Our love track has started so lots of masti and love is happening.

Hey folks!!
I'm sure you all guys enjoyed the 'Girls v/s Boys' basketball game, we all put up on-screen in Dill Mill Gayye. Though it was just a scene, at a personal level, it was a real game for all of us. Braving the scorching heat, we girls and boys were eager to show each other our skills in basketball! But frankly it was just a good opportunity to prove whose the best-girls or boys.
If you ask me, I have been out to prove that boys are best even in school and college when my buddies used to tease or scare the girls. Till today I remember the pranks we played on the girls and getting into silly competitions just to prove ourselves better. Oh it was such fun, we used to boo, cheer and blow catcalls at the girls.

Even today, at least for me, those old times have just the same zing. And now I have a grand stage to take this never ending battle of the sexes onto the dance floor. You must be wondering

Armaan and on the dance floor? Well, you always knew I had some hidden talent or the other so why not dancing. So my latest move is that I am all set to don up a new avatar by anchoring a sensational new show called 'Zara Nachke Dikha' on Star One. And you know who will be my co-host? It will be the sweet and witty Shweta Gulati. After an era of Dr. Armaan and Dr. Riddhima's tiffs on trivial issues, it'll be Karan and Shweta fighting it out for our own genders respectively.

But to tell you the truth-I love girls and at no point do I want to pick fights with them. But you know how it is. We boys can neither live with the girls nor live without them also. Can I say girls are necessary evils, that at least I can't live without? Alright, if some of you didn't like what I just said then you can get back at me while watching the show. On my side will be 8 handsome hunks. I call them Tez Talwar Ladke. And on Shweta's side will be 8 beautiful women. Shweta calls them Meethi Churi Ladkiyan.

Finally, all you girls, please take care! Because I love you but just cant help teasing you and enjoy your beautiful company….so lets have a lot of fun together and play this mother of battles and decide whose the best girls or boys.
